PLANET MAN

BEVIS MARTIN ET CHARLIE YOULE

With their fascination for outsider art, Surrealism and found objects, this English artist duo, who have been living in Nantes since 2003, play with the notions of authorship and originality, creating a body of work that is essentially sculptural.

The starting point for their work is often a borrowed image, which can be taken from anything ranging from something out of an art collection to a schoolbook bought at a second-hand shop, to whatever remains of their education, like a distant memory or something they never fully understood.

Planet Man questions the way in which the human figure is often used to educate children, where an anthropomorphic perspective lends numbers, vegetables, or planets a human shape. This work – an improbable object made up of eight planets – facetiously caricatures the self-given missions of art and pedagogy in expressing concepts.
