Les Esprits, l'Or et le Chaman

01.07.2017 - 27.08.2017

Over 220 fascinating gold objects taken from the collections of the prestigious Gold Museum in Bogotá are on display for the French public.

The development of metallurgy and goldsmithery in Columbia’s pre-Hispanic societies once reached unprecedented heights. The country, now known as Colombia, was a hub of important experimentation and inventions in metal-working. The chiefs and shamans of pre-Columbian societies succeeded in transforming themselves through the use of gold objects that they also wore with the aim of reinforcing their prestige and authority.
The encounter between these societies and the conquistadors would lead to the myth of El Dorado, a lost city with men covered in gold.

After Mexico City, Washington, and London (British Museum), the exhibition, Les Esprits,
l’Or et le Chaman is presented in Nantes as part of France-Colombia 2017 year, in partnership with the Gold Museum of Columbia.

The exhibition offers a universal reflection on the theme of transformation and identity. Over 220 fascinating gold objects taken from the collections of the prestigious Gold Museum in Bogotá are on display for the French public.
